His political journey as a student leader started from here. He was elected MP for the first time from Jabalpur itself. Yadav, who started student politics from Malviya Chowk in Jabalpur, hoisted the flag till the Parliament of the country. He was always a favorite of both the party and the opposition. In the politics of the country, he was counted among the flamboyant public leaders. Tilak Yadav, who was his colleague in Jabalpur in the student movement, told that Sharad Yadav was originally a resident of Akhmau village of Hoshangabad. He obtained B.Sc from Science College, Jabalpur and degree in Electronics Engineer from Engineering College. He started student politics while studying in engineering college. He united the students of all the colleges of Jabalpur. Tilak Yadav told that Sharad Yadav had become the universal leader of the students and Malviya Chowk of the city was his base. Sharad Yadav considered Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia, a renowned socialist leader, as his political guru. He had an important role in the JP movement. After the death of Seth Govind Das, he filed nomination for the Jabalpur Lok Sabha by-election held in the year 1974 while in jail. Before voting, he got relief from the High Court. He had filed nomination as an independent candidate and the symbol was Haldhar Kisan. He was supported by the entire opposition. ‘Lallu neither Jagdhar will get stamped on Haldhar’
In this election, he defeated Ravi Mohan, the son of Seth Govind Das. Sharad Yadav was elected MP only at the age of . During this his slogan was ‘Lallu Ko Neither Jagdhar will be stamped on Haldhar.’ MISA action was taken against Yadav twice and he remained in jail for 7 more months. ,
