Indian Navy is preparing to buy three diesel powered attack submarines being built in collaboration with France. For this, the Navy can soon contact the Defense Acquisition Council (DAC). Air Independent Operated (AIP) these submarines are to be built at Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited. According to the information, based on the specific requirements of the Indian Navy, the contract for the construction of three AIP submarines will be given to MDL. MDL has already built six French Scorpene-based Kalvari class submarines for the Indian Navy. Whereas, INS Vagshir is expected to be inducted into the Navy before March .

DRDO will develop AIP fitted in submarines

The AIP fitted in the three submarines will be developed by DRDO. The French Naval Group will test it. After testing, this AIP will be installed in submarines. India, in collaboration with France, is looking to upgrade its submarine fleet with three nuclear-powered conventional weapon-armed submarines.

Exercise to include the submarine in the warship at the earliest

The decision to acquire nuclear attack submarines may take procedural time. India to get a nuclear attack submarine in return for the already leased INS Chakra in 8369 under a contract with Russia are supposed to. India did this deal with Russia long before the Ukraine war started.

Strategically nuclear submarine with China is very special

Neighboring China is also a big challenge for India in the sea. China has eight nuclear ballistic missile submarines and 13 China has strengthened its military fleet with Shang and Han class nuclear powered attack submarines. Meanwhile, along with two aircraft carriers of the People’s Liberation Army, the third one is also going to be ready, which can start patrolling the sea soon. In such a situation, India will also have to keep a big defense preparedness in the sea.
