According to the Ministry of Civil Aviation, Chennai airport is spread over 2. lakh square meters. It can handle about 35 million passengers per annum. To facilitate the movement of air passengers and to expedite the processes connected therewith, the arrival and departure points will have 35 immigration counters each. Integrated Terminal Building built at a cost of Rs. 1260 crores brings to the fore the local Tamil culture. Traditional elements like kolams, sarees and temples are displayed here. For example the ceiling is designed with motif lights, which represent the Kolam style. The pillars and pillars are constructed of stainless steel with champagne strips engraved on them giving a golden feel. ,
