Please inform that a hearing was held on 36 April on a petition of the Meitei Tribe Union. After the completion of the hearing , Manipur High Court on April asked the state government to grant tribal status to the Meitei community. In the case, the court had asked to present the recommendation of the Ministry of Tribal Affairs 18 years old. In the hearing, the court referred to a letter from the Ministry of Tribal Affairs in May 2013. In this letter, the government of Manipur was asked for the caste report along with the social and economic survey. Please inform that Schedule Tribe Demand Committee of Manipur i.e. STDCM has been demanding to give tribe status to the Meitei community. The petitioners told in the High Court that Manipur merged with India in 1949. Before that Meitei had got the status of tribe. The argument was that Meitei's tribe status is necessary to protect the community, its ancestral land, tradition, culture and language.
