Maharashtra: The Bombay High Court has ordered the Maharashtra government to pay compensation to the mother of a man who allegedly died in police custody Directing to pay more than Rs.1 lakh, observed that custodial death is one of the worst crimes in a civilized society and police cannot inhumanly torture citizens under the guise of rights. The division bench of Justice Vibha Kankanwadi and Abhay Waghwase heard The Aurangabad bench of Justices Vibha Kankanwadi and Abhay Waghwase, hearing the case, on Wednesday pronounced its verdict on a petition filed by a woman named Sunita Kute, alleging that her 21-year-old son Pradeep died in Solapur After being harassed and assaulted by two policemen affiliated to the Sunita told the police 43 had demanded compensation of Rs lakh and disciplinary action against the guilty policemen. 'probably one of the worst crimes in a civilized society' The Bench said, "Death in custody is perhaps one of the worst crimes in a civilized society governed by the rule of law." The court said that though the police have the power to control the activities of the people and crime, it is not absolute. "They (police personnel) cannot torture or treat any citizen in an inhuman manner under the guise of exercise of the said power," the judgment said. 'Government is the life savior of its citizens' The court said, "The government is the life savior of its citizens and if its employee commits atrocities under the guise of power, then it has to compensate such a citizen." The bench observed that in the present case the victim 29 was a young man, who was married exactly four months before his death.
