2006 Siddaramaiah joined Congress
Siddaramaiah, known for his anti-Congress stance, was associated with ‘Janata Parivar’ for nearly two and a half decades and had joined Congress in 2006. Congress and Janata Dal (Secular) formed a coalition government in Karnataka after a fractured mandate in the year 2006, in which Congress leader N. Dharam Singh the Chief Minister while the then JD(S) leader Siddaramaiah was made the Deputy Chief Minister. Siddaramaiah belongs to the Kuruba community and this community has the third largest population in the state. Siddaramaiah reached the assembly for the first time by winning the Chamundeshwari assembly seat on a Lok Dal ticket in . He won from this seat five times and tasted defeat three times.
