He did not field a candidate, after which he rebelled against the party and joined the Congress party today. Simultaneously, when Shettar reached his home in Hubli, his wife broke down in tears. After joining Congress, Jagadish Shettar told reporters, being a senior leader, I had thought that BJP would give me ticket, but I was shocked when I came to know that I am not getting ticket. No one even talked to me nor was an attempt made to persuade me. Accusing the BJP of humiliating himself, Jagadish Shettar said that after consulting all his well-wishers and supporters, I have decided to quit the party and contest the upcoming assembly elections. He said, then MB Patil, Surjewala, Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar approached me and asked me to join the Congress. I was forced out of the party that I formed. There was no option before me. Therefore, I am joining it wholeheartedly accepting the ideology and principles of the Congress.

Jagadish Shettar joined the party in the presence of Congress national president Mallikarjun Kharge, party general secretary KC Venugopal, Karnataka in-charge Randeep Singh Surjewala, Congress state unit president DK Shivakumar and former chief minister Siddaramaiah, among others. His move has boosted the morale of the Congress. MB Patil, chairman of the party’s campaign committee, said, now the Lingayats will turn against the BJP and turn to the Congress.
