At present, he is MLA from Kanakapura Hai, a constituency that was once a JD(S) stronghold. In 2013, he defeated JD(S) heavyweight PGR Scindia from ,000 Won the constituency with the most votes. Not just Scindia, Shivakumar has also defeated JD(S) supremo and former prime minister HD Deve Gowda and his son HD Kumaraswamy from Bengaluru Rural seats. After these victories, he came to be known as ‘Giant Killer’.
