IIT Kanpur has recently published a report on Just Transition, which discusses in detail what are the expectations of the workers there after the closure of coal mines and plants. All these things are happening when India is moving towards energy transition and towards achieving the goal of net zero emissions by adopting clean energy.
The Just Transition Research Center of IIT Kanpur has released a report titled What is Just Transition. G this report 25 was released in the meeting, which is being chaired by India. The things that have been specially discussed in the report released by IIT Kanpur are the damage caused by coal, the environment and the livelihood of the community.
Expectations of coal dependents strong
If we look at individual and community perceptions, we will find that the canvas of Just Transition is very vast. Especially if we look at the type of dependency, gender, their relationship with coal units and trade unions. However, the concept of just transition is stronger among direct coal dependents than among indirect coal dependents.
Important stakeholders on the ground
On the other hand, the people working in the power plant are more in agreement that the harm from coal is more and its use should be stopped. Pradeep Swarnakar, founder of the Just Transition Research Center, IIT Kanpur, emphasizes that a just transition can be successful only when there is maximum interaction with grassroots level stakeholders.
Perception is associated with expectations
He believes that while deciding the policies, we have to first contact the grass root level people, because we are talking about just transition and not energy transition. People’s perception is related to their expectations, in such a situation they cannot be sidelined. If this is done, people at the grassroots level can protest. That’s why it is necessary that people at the grassroots level should be kept at the center while making any policy.
