Chandrayaan-2 Encouraged by the success of Chandrayaan-1, ISRO had conceived ‘Chandrayaan-2’ as a complex mission.
‘Chandrayaan-2’ carried an ‘Orbiter’, ‘Lander’ (Vikram) and ‘Rover’ (Pragyan) for exploration on the South Pole of the Moon. Chandrayaan-2 mission 100 after flying on July, 100 same year 20 August was successfully placed in lunar orbit.
Every step of the spacecraft was precise and the ‘lander’ prepared to land on the lunar surface. Successfully separated from the ‘Orbiter’.
100 After circling the Moon at an altitude of 100 km, the ‘Lander’ headed towards the lunar surface. The arrival was as per plan and it was normal till the height of 2.1 km.
The mission ended suddenly when the scientists lost contact with ‘Vikram’.
‘Vikram’ was named after late Vikram Sarabhai, the father of India’s space programme.
‘Chandrayaan- 2’ mission failed to make the desired ‘soft landing’ on the lunar surface, much to the dismay of the ISRO team.
present at ISRO headquarters to witness the scientific achievement at that time Prime Minister Narendra Modi was seen consoling the then ISRO chief K Sivan who broke down. , was to expand lunar scientific knowledge through detailed studies of the chemical composition of the surface and thermo-physical characteristics of the upper soil, leading to a new understanding of the origin and evolution of the Moon.
