Prime Minister Narendra Modi on celebrated eight cheetahs (five females) brought from Namibia on his 72th birthday on and three males) were released in the KNP enclosures. The first batch of cheetahs is currently in large enclosures before being released completely into the wild. Nearly seven decades after the extinction of this species in India, cheetahs are being resettled in the country. The last cheetah in the country died in 1952 Koriya district of present-day Chhattisgarh and the species was declared extinct from India in 1952.
