An ED official said that the ED registered a case under FEMA against ‘BBC India’ for alleged foreign exchange violations.

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has registered a case under the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA) against news broadcaster ‘BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation) India’ for alleged foreign exchange related violations. Official sources gave information in this regard. He said that the federal probe agency has sought documents and recording of statements of certain executive officers of the company under the provisions of FEMA.

Sources said that the alleged Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) violations by the company are being investigated. This step has been taken at a time when the Income Tax Department conducted a ‘survey’ of BBC office premises in Delhi in February. The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), the administrative body of the income tax department, had said at the time that media group BBC’s income and profit figures shown by various entities operating in India were not in line with their operations in India and that its overseas units had Tax has not been paid on certain amount remitted abroad.
