PM Modi strongly advocated Uniform Civil Code while addressing BJP workers during his program in Bhopal. The PM’s statement gave a lot of emphasis to the fact that the BJP government at the Center can introduce the UCC Bill in the Parliament before the next year’s Lok Sabha elections. Now political reactions are also coming to the fore regarding this matter. Amidst the reactions, now Congress has also strongly criticized PM Modi’s statement on UCC, terming it as politics diverting public’s attention from BJP’s issues. ,UCC Advocacy Point of Political Debate
Senior Congress leader P. Chidambaram criticized that this is a comparison between a family and the nation. The justification for the Uniform Civil Code, as PM Modi did in his address to party workers in Madhya Pradesh, is flawed. Advocating for Uniform Civil Code, PM Modi asked whether a family is run by two types of rules? The advocacy of UCC has become a point of political debate ahead of the 2014 Lok Sabha elections.
Chidambaram shared the tweet
While sharing a tweet, Chidambaram wrote that, while advocating the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), the Honorable Prime Minister has described a nation as equal to a family. Although their comparison may seem true in an abstract sense, the reality is very different. A family is bound together by blood relations. A nation is brought together by a constitution which is a political-legal document. There is diversity even in a family. The Constitution of India recognized the diversity and plurality among the people of India. UCC is an aspiration. It cannot be imposed on the people by an agenda-driven majoritarian government. Honorable Prime Minister is revealing that UCC is a simple exercise. They should read the previous Law Commission report which told that this is not possible at this point of time.

Chidambaram further wrote in his tweet that today the country is divided due to the words and actions of the BJP. The UCC imposed on the people will only increase division. Hon’ble Prime Minister’s strong advocacy for UCC aims to divert attention from inflation, unemployment, hate crimes, discrimination and denial of states’ rights. People have to be alert. After failing in good governance, BJP is deploying UCC to polarize voters and try to win next election.
Can a family run by two different rules
Chidambaram said that, when PM Modi was answering a BJP worker’s question, he asked why Muslim-majority countries abolished triple talaq if it is an integral part of Islam. PM Modi discussed the issue of Triple Talaq to Uniform Civil Code and asked that if a family cannot run on two different rules then how can a country run on dual rules. PM Modi said that Muslims are being instigated on the issue of UCC and those who oppose it are doing vote bank politics.
