Malayalam New Year ‘Vishu’ celebrated with gusto in Kerala
Kerala on Saturday People celebrated the Malayalam New Year ‘Vishu’ with great enthusiasm wishing for the coming days full of prosperity and happiness. Vishu is celebrated as a harvest festival and falls on the first day of the Malayalam month of ‘Medam’. In Hindu families, the day begins with getting up early in the morning and watching Vishukkani. It is a custom under which things are kept decorated in copper utensils as it is considered a symbol of hope and prosperity and it is visited early in the morning. Apart from seasonal fruits, vegetables, flowers, rice, gold ornaments, clothes, coins and scriptures are placed in front of God in a brass vessel and people see him first when they wake up in the morning on the day of Vishu.
