Karnataka Assembly Election: Senior Congress leader and former minister M.B. Patil said that he is a senior leader of the Lingayat community and there is no threat to his status due to Jagadish Shettar and Laxman Savadi from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) nor will his chances of becoming the chief minister be affected. Congress’s campaign committee chairman Patil said in the conversation that he is also a contender for the chief minister’s post. However, senior leader Siddaramaiah and Karnataka Pradesh Congress President (KPC) chief DK Shivakumar are among the frontrunners for the post.

The party knows that I worked to bring Shettar to the Congress. The party should come to power and it is in the larger interest. Significantly, former Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar comes from the Baniga (merchant) sub-sect of the Lingayat community. He and Savadi are considered influential leaders of the Lingayat community in North Karnataka.
