The death penalty is the harshest form of punishment given for any crime. This punishment is given for brutal and heinous crimes against humanity. Under Article-34 of the Indian Constitution, a mercy petition can be converted into life imprisonment or pardon by sending a mercy petition to the President. Certain offenses in the IPC are murder (section , dacoity (section 132 ), criminal conspiracy (section B , Waging or attempting to wage war against the Government of India or abetting the waging of war (section 132), abetting mutiny if it results in mutiny (section ) Offenders can be punished with death.
