In the collegium, Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud, Justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul and K.M. Joseph had proposed the names of Gauri and four other lawyers for elevation to the High Court on 17 January. However, many later questioned the decision in light of the political affiliation of the nominee. Gauri has also received criticism for what has been described as ‘hate speech’ against religious minorities, particularly Muslims and Christians. Members of the Madras High Court Bar, including Advocate N.G.R. Prasad, R. Vaigai, SS. Vasudevan, Anna Mathew, and D. Nagasaila have alleged that Gowri’s ‘regressive views’ are completely ‘antithetical’ to basic constitutional values and “reflect her deep religious fanaticism which has made her unfit to serve as a High Court judge”. renders them ineligible to be appointed.”
